Amazon Japan’s Sommeliers

Amazon Japan’s Sommeliers

Ordering wine online just got classy

By

Amazon Japan recently announced the launch of a new service that will help you, the wine novice, navigate through their extensive online catalogue.

Customers will now be able to consult over the phone with a certified sommelier—think that restaurant waiter who says things like, “an oaky taste with a hint of forest floor”—before ordering your drop. The service is available for free for customers who order through Amazon, although currently only in Japanese and for a limited timeframe, from 12pm to 5pm, daily.

In a country that prides itself on efficient retail experiences, the online giant had continued to find a strong foothold in Japan, one of the company’s biggest non-U.S. markets. With creative services like on-demand sommeliers, one can only wonder what other surprises lay around the corner.
