A wreck of a grief drama

A hot investment banker cripplingly melancholic over the loss of his wife in a car accident can begin to build a new life only after demolishing his old one. Trouble is, when he finally finds himself, he’s not all that interesting. That’s not the fault of Jake Gyllenhaal, one of the best actors working today. But despite another energetic and committed performance (which for some will alone be worth the ticket price), he lost me this time. This indulgent, manipulative downer from Jean Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers’ Club) neither sustains its initial goodwill and whimsy, nor matches Gyllenhaal’s energy. (101 min)
