Cross-Dressers in Ukiyo-e: Exhibition

March 2 at 10:30 am - April 21 at 5:30 pm

Cross-Dressers in Ukiyo-e

The culture of cross-dressing is seen throughout history, across different countries from the East to the West. In Japan, people were familiar with the concept of cross-dressing and switching genders since the Edo period, when geisha performed in men’s clothing and male Kabuki actors specialised in female roles. Through ukiyo-e pictures, Cross-Dressers in Ukiyo-e will present the various customs and cultures in the Edo period which flow freely beyond boundaries of male and female.
