Exactly Wrong

MAKI Gallery is pleased to present Exactly Wrong, Canada-based artist Tammi Campbell’s first solo exhibition in Asia. Premiering across both Tennozu and Omotesando, Tokyo, the extensive survey will showcase nearly 30 new paintings that continue the artist’s practice of replicating iconic artworks by Frank Stella, Ed Ruscha, Josef Albers, and for the first time, Andy Warhol.
Tammi Campbell (b. 1974) holds a BFA from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. The artist is known for her meticulously researched replications of iconic works by Modernist and Pop masters, such as Frank Stella, Ed Ruscha, Josef Albers, and Andy Warhol. She distinguishes her works from the originals by applying hyperreal mock packaging materials cast in acrylic paint or purposefully leaving some areas unfinished, playfully subverting the many myths and assumptions that pervade Western art historical canon. Over the past ten years, Campbell has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada and the U.S., including Boring Art, Anat Ebgi (Los Angeles, 2019); Bring Ice, Thanks, Arsenal Contemporary Art (New York, 2019); Concerning Certain Events, Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon, 2015); Why Can’t Minimal, Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (Toronto, 2014); Fool Me Twice, Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina, 2013); The Thick Of It, Mercer Union (Toronto, 2013); and Le Projet Peinture, Galerie de l’UQAM (Montreal, 2013). She has also participated in the Canadian Biennale 2014 at the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa, as well as the 30th International Symposium of Contemporary Art of Baie-St-Paul. Campbell currently lives and works in Montreal, Quebec.
