Fabric Dyeing Festival
Feb 21, 2020 - Feb 23, 2020¥ Free
The areas around Myoshoji River was historically a place full of fabric dye factories. Located in Nakai and Ochiai west of Shinjuku until the 1950s, the factories dyed and printed kimono cloths. The fabric was then washed in the river and put outside to dry. As an artistic tribute to this tradition, colorful pieces of kimono cloth will be installed along the path between Myoshojigawa Jisaibashi (in front of Nakai Station) and Tashobashithe. Dancing above the water surface, these 50 to 60 pieces called tan mono have been donated by dyeing workers. Also the shopping areas around will be decorated with noren —the dyed curtain-like fabric to be seen hanging in front of the entrances to restaurants, onsen and traditional shops.
