Five Great Painters

Jul 16, 2021 at 10:30am ~ Sep 09, 2021 at 7:30pm

The passion and imagination of Edo Period artists are captured in woodblock prints and paintings, folding screens and fusuma sliding doors of the era. Their stunning dynamism is set free to the present day by digital technology in a captivating audio-visual presentation projected on a massive screen.

DTIP (Dynamic Texture Image Processing) technology translates these masterpieces into ultrahigh-definition digital masters. Everything from the uneven surface detail that reflects Hokusai and Hiroshige’s skilled touch to the delicate fiber strands in the traditional washi paper has all been successfully captured and reproduced with three-dimensional realism.

Cutting-edge digital scanning and multi-layered image processing captures the gold leaf, gold foil strips, gold flakes, and gold dust of the byobu folding screens and fusuma sliding doors and highlights the subtle difference of each artist’s expression. Stories exquisitely depicted by Sotatsu, Korin, and Jakuchu come to life in vibrant detail.

In the commentary theater area, ultra-high resolution digital images magnify the artwork’s details. Narration (with English subtitles) explains the details of each work.
