This year Fujiyoshida city will play host to Fuji Textile Week 2021, a hybrid event featuring machine shop exhibitions and art exhibitions utilizing textiles.

Fujiyoshida has prospered as a textile city for more than 1000 years due to the lush landscape and the cool mountain stream that flows down from Mt. Fuji. However, in recent years, the Japanese textile industry has suffered due to competition from cheap overseas manufacturing and economic recession.  As a result, the textile industry in Fujiyoshida City has undergone various changes in the last 10 years but with eyes on regional revitalization and renewed interest from industry representatives Fujiyoshida City is looking towards a new future centred on its centuries old textile industry.

Fuji Textile Week 2021 will bring local industry together and build networks for the creation, dissemination, activation, and succession of the city’s textiles. Set in vacant stores, warehouses and old banks around the central city area at the foot of Mt. Fuji, 12 machine shop exhibitions and 10 groups of artists including Shinji Omaki, Yumi Kori, Miya Nishio will exhibit their works. The event will also feature panel discussions with artists and machine shop owners, live performances and bus tours around the city.
