It’s not every day you here The Beatles’ classic ‘Here Comes the Sun’ on the concert harp.
Returning to performing after having a child, renowned Tokyo harpist Kaoru Arai-Colucci found that it was difficult to go to classical concerts with a baby in tow, so she decided to put on a solo show that would be enjoyable for children and adults alike. While pregnant, Arai-Colucci embarked on a maternity leave project where she recorded videos of her performing everything from Chopin to Frank Sinatra to James Blunt and uploaded them to YouTube. This solo concert showcases the highlights of the project at the Tokyo Prince Park Tower hotel and, rarely for such an esteemed venue, children are welcome.
Fluent in English and constantly challenging stereotypes about mothers, freelancers and musicians in Japan, Arai-Colucci’s magnetic personality makes her performances wonderful to watch, as well as her remarkable musicianship. If you want a Sunday afternoon that combines accessibility with musical excellence and a touch of class, head this way.
