Jean-Philippe Delhomme Exhibition

Aug 31 at 11:00 am - Oct 14 at 7:00 pm

For his first solo exhibition at PERROTIN Tokyo, Jean-Philippe Delhomme will present a series of new portraits produced in his Paris studio. Delhomme’s portrait records the presence of the model in the controlled situation of the studio. The compositional setup is simple: minimal staging and instructions regarding the postures of the models.

Delhomme selected this specific ambiance for the Tokyo show as an homage to 17th-century Dutch portraiture, where the models also appear against dark-toned backgrounds. It is also a reference to Junichiro Tanizaki’s “In Praise of Shadows”, which explores how light is perceived in Western and Japanese aesthetics.

Delhomme will present The Studio, a selection of works displayed in the exhibition and windows of Isetan Shinjuku department store (ISETAN THE SPACE) from September 2 to September 15. Exhibited alongside still-life paintings, these portraits feature brighter backdrops, giving the viewers a glimpse into the artist’s studio.
