Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy) is about the aesthetics of drawing. But also, it helps you face yourself by calming and healing your mind and making you concentrate on expressing your feelings in the process of drawing. In addition, it helps correct posture and increases your concentration which works on brain activation. In this workshop, art director and shodo instructor Mokuho Shingai will give a lecture about the essentials of calligraphy with an original point of view, and let you express your favorite characters freely. You can learn the basics of this Japanese traditional culture in this class including the proper way of holding the brush, making calligraphy ink and expressing your identity through drawing. Beginners are welcome. If you prefer, you can learn a higher level technique at your request. Start with practicing your favorite words and comparing it to the examples provided. You’ll write on proper paper which you can bring home.
Mr Shingai graduated from the Japan Educational Calligraphy Art Institute and won the 1st prize of the 36th JECA competition and the award for Excellence of Tokyo Calligraphy Competition. He designed the packaging of Yonayona Ale beer and the onsen logo for Hoshino Resort, has much esteem winning gold and silver in the Japan Package Design Award and the Japan Typography Association Judges Choice awards. Currently, he is the art director at Zuan. His achievements are sure to inspire you.
Please bring you own shodo kit to the workshop. Alternatively, you can buy one at the workshop for ¥3,500. Just let them know in advance.
