Love in the Edo Period: Romance in Ukiyo-e

Jan 05, 2022 at 10:30am ~ Jan 30, 2022 at 5:30pm

Throughout the Edo period the newly wealthy merchant classes came to indulge in the more hedonistic joys of kabuki theater, Geisha and pleasure districts. Ukiyo-e came to document this period of Japan’s history through block prints and paintings, literally translated as “pictures of the floating world.”  Love between men and women of all classes was a popular topic in art at the time, and in this exhibition ukiyo-e art pieces depicting love in all its forms throughout the Edo period from ancient Japanese beauties to traditional folk tales will be on display.
