Tokyo’s Monoral are living proof that the thwarted musicians who form the bulk of MTV’s VJ staff can, in fact, realize their musical dreams. The group is comprised of Anis, born in London to a Japanese father and Moroccan mother, and Ali, born in Tokyo to an American father and a Japanese mother. The former MTV Japan VJs created Monoral in 1999 out of a shared love of Radiohead, Soundgarden and Portishead. After a decade of hard work—including a recent 15-month slog around the world that ended in Shanghai—the band is back in Japan with a new single, “Origin,” and a domestic tour that’s sure to sell out quickly.
