The 42nd Setagaya Plum Blossom Festival 2019 (Setagaya Ume Matsuri) takes place at Hanegi Park in Umegaoka from February 9th until early March.
Hanegi park is a short walk from Umegaoka station and is a real community meeting point. They have places where kids can play and build and get covered in mud. Oh and in late February they have the plum blossom festival.
The park is a doable size – If you make plans to meet up with friends there then you will find them, unlike some of Tokyo’s larger parks.
The park is basically one small hill with long slopes.
Until about 1960 the southern slope was covered with bamboo grass, but then 55 ceremonial plum trees were planted.
After that, following the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Tokyo in 1964 and the 40th anniversary of the Setagaya ward the following year more trees were planted.
Hanegi park now has one of the best collections of plum trees in Tokyo. There are 650 trees in total – 270 red plum trees and 380 white plum trees.
