Mar 14 at 1:00 am - Mar 22 at 7:00 pmFree
A solo exhibition by VIKI, “Narrative Fragments: a different you, me, and the world” will be held at Gallery Jiyugaoka. This is VIKI’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. It will be featured with his various works including a new production of a collage art made of shop receipts in which he attempts, as his new challenge, to recreate value from ephemeral pieces of shop receipts, two-dimensional and three-dimensional productions of cans inspired by creations of Andy Warhol and Genpei Akasegawa, silk screen on multi-layered different materials, and collected drawings.
An active young artist based in Japan, a member of Inter-media art, Tokyo University of the Arts. Devoting in creating work of art with the theme, “Time, consumption, and beyond”, focusing on connections between oneself and others in the information affluent society and “individuality” in the flowing passage of time.
“Silence in the beginning”, the main theme of this exhibition is a silk screen work made of shop receipts that are records and memory of Heisei era, inspired by VIKI’s own experience of not able to grasp what had really changed when the era became Reiwa. In Heisei era, with an advent of the Internet, our society became out of control, flooded with information. “Big data” from our activities is multiplied and proliferated. “Individuality” is fading, and reality is constantly changing. What are the reality and falsehood? In the era of Reiwa, pieces of memory of Heisei help us ponder over “individuality.”
VIKI has this to say about the relation of his productions and appreciators as follows: We are unable to perceive our own figures. What we see in a mirror are imaginary self. What you see yourself in videos, photos, and your recorded voices are merely a data chunk reproduced using someone else’s technology. In other words, real “individuality” can be observed only by other beings. I sometimes call my work of art “presentation.” It is because my creations present, like plays and musics, the reality of me at this moment. It contains not only visual images, but also tangible “individuality” of myself. Through the eyes of viewers, I become someone else so that I can perceive just the same way as the viewers do. We are all able to see ourselves only through the eyes of others.
You have your own freedom on how to view and feel the art of VIKI. Are you curious how VIKI’s works of art involving modern time flow will transform responding to your views? Come to the gallery and experience this unique exhibition.
While the exhibition is open from 1pm – 7pm, please note that on the final day it will close at 5pm.
