Survivors, Calm Yourselves! Theatre Tram Next Generation: A program to discover emerging artists. Setagaya Public Theatre (SePT) Presents Anju-no-Chi (SAFE HAVEN), a collective of next-generation artists brimming with vigor and possibility! Co-written and co-directed by Masaya Okamoto and Kapi Shido.

Vol. 14 SAFE HAVEN Survivors, Calm Yourselves!

The casts of Survivors, Calm Yourselves! are selected from an open call with the opportunity to perform at Theatre Tram. Furthermore, after 2 years without putting out any performance for the public, Theatre Tram Next Generation is returning with a vol. 14 of “Survivors, Calm Yourself!” in collaboration with the performance by SAFE HAVEN (a company founded 5 years ago who has made their significant mark in the theater world) SAFE HAVEN drive towards progressive changes in theater and their consistent series of innovative ideas infused into their works have served as an opening towards expansive possibilities in the performing arts.

Moreover, their energy-filled performances present a memorable theatrical experience for the audiences. Similarly they don’t shy away from working with artists from various genres to add a diversity into their plays. In addition to creating energetic performances that leave an impact on audiences through their innovative use of theatrical space, they also create very different works in collaboration with various artists from different genres.

As we enter a new generation of youth who are growing to be more curious and critical about social issues, with increasing discussions of topics that may not be considered important enough for us as a society to delve into. For this reason, the creators have chosen to speak about Diversity through their casts of actors. Furthermore touching on various more complex aspects that build diversity including the differences of race, nationality, gender, religion and fundamental values. This works crosses that barrier of discomfort and doubts and hold this topic closely as a key theme, aiming to depict the state of co-existence that follows a discordant period of conflict.

“Is reconciliation possible in the wake of that kind of conflict? Is it possible to achieve diversity without reconciliation?” Survivors, Calm Yourselves! wishes to deliver an impactful performance and above all, to invite us to the conversation of diversity.

Summary

In the distant future, earth’s environment has transformed dramatically from its state in the 21st century. A group of survivors remains on a small island in the far east known as Fujiyama—the peak of Mt. Fuji, formerly known for its impressive 3776m height. As a result, all kinds of beings have gathered there, seeking a place to live, including humans, beast men, animals, supernatural creatures, monsters, and more. Therefore begins an interspecies conflict in which each group draws on their own language as well as culture in a battle for a home, and for justice on top of their own continued existence.
