Tatsuo Miyajima “Uncertain”

Nov 7, 2020 - Dec 12, 2020

Tatsuo Miyajima, also at the Mori Art Museum’s Stars exhibition, is famous for his light-emitting diode (LED) artworks, which reflect the flow of life through the never-ending repetition and sequence of numbers 1 to 9.  The new series of paintings exhibited at SCAI the Bathhouse called “Painting of Change” represent a number from 1 to 9 divided into 7 segments. A specially made polyhedron dice determines the number of each of the 5 paintings to appear on the wall, and the paintings are given shapes through extracting segments, inviting the audience to ponder the circle of life. “Paintings of Change” by Miyajima refers to John Cage’s “Music of Change,” and employs a critical approach to the work.
