The Story of Descending the Long Slopes of Valparaíso

Aug 21, 2019 at 7:30 pm - Aug 25, 2019 at 2:00 pm

“The Story of Descending the Long Slopes of Valparaiso” consists of several stories which Yudai Kamisato, playwright and director, wrote on his travels through various parts of South America. They are performed by Argentine actors and dancers, as well as Eduard Fukushima, a dancer born into a family of Japanese immigrants in Brazil who has achieved prominence in Europe, in their native language Spanish. Subtitles are in English and Japanese.

Kamisato was born in Peru and grew up in Japan. After visiting a university in Tokyo he established his theater company “Okazaki Art Theatre” in 2003. A scholarship by the Agency of Cultural Affairs enabled him in 2016 to spend eleven months in Buenos Aires. Based on his experiences the play “The Story of Descending the Long Slopes of Valparaiso” developed and in 2018 it won the renowned Kishida Kunio drama award. After the world premiere 2017 at the Kyoto Experiment Festival the play will now be performed in Tokyo for the first time.
