The Face of Love

An odd movie that makes a maudlin story work

A woman (Annette Bening) still mourning the loss of her wonderful husband (Ed Harris) five years earlier spots, while  at a museum, a man who’s his exact double. She stalks, meets and causes him to fall in love with her, keeping the uncanny resemblance secret from family and friends—and even from the new guy himself.

What could go wrong? I’m not sure what this odd little movie thinks it’s doing. Separated at birth? Weird fantasy? Portrait of a mad woman? But this is a case in which two great actors can make such a maudlin, disjointed story work, and they’re a pleasure to watch. (92 min)
