Jane Got a Gun

A well-armed eternal triangle

A frontier woman (Natalie Portman) enlists the help of a former lover (Joel Edgerton) to defend her wounded outlaw husband (Noah Emmerich) from an approaching band of killers. Flashbacks fill us in on this odd triangle’s history, and clever plot twists compel character reexaminations. While the film’s themes of revenge and female empowerment occasionally stumble over each other, this is a well-crafted treat for western fans. The characters and their motivations are believable (if you don’t count Ewan McGregor as a Snidely Whiplash villain with a laughable accent) and the denouement’s satisfying. (98 min)
