By-the-numbers sanctimonious drivel

The title refers to the nefarious practice of fake overseas adoption agencies “selling” children to wealthy Americans, then kidnapping the kids back, packing up shop, and moving on to the next location and the next victims. John Cusack takes on yet another so-so, sleazy villain role, and a bland Ryan Phillippe and a frisky Rachelle Lefevre are the target parental hopefuls.

But don’t mistake this sanctimonious drivel for social activism. This is surprise-free, by-the-numbers moviemaking at its worst—a cheap, insultingly predictable mix of fisticuffs, car chases, frenetic dialogue, and a literal cliff-hanging scene. Japanese title: Missing Day. (96 min)
