This boxing champ’s riches-to-rags-to-redemption movie is worth watching solely for Jake Gyllenhaal’s immersive and committed performance, not to mention Forrest Whitaker’s as his trainer. But little else.
If only the thing had a shred of originality. It’s not that I don’t like boxing movies. Creed was brilliant. But this flat-footed, surprise-free effort from Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) redefines the term “formulaic” and seems to be constructed out of large chunks of previous pugilistic pictures. The story’s cliché-ridden, illogical and manipulative. Jake’s character’s name is “Hope” fer crissake. (124 min)
