Offbeat cop opera

A slightly off-kilter Las Vegas evidence-room cop (Nicolas Cage, no one better) talks a young colleague (Elijah Wood) into helping him pull off a hugely profitable heist. There’s an entertaining dynamic between the two actors, and plenty of offbeat humor, laced with menace, during the setup. A major halfway-point tonal shift takes it into way darker territory, however, and it loses focus. That’s not to say there isn’t fun to be had, but you’ll have to be on the film’s wavelength. Not great, but these days any Nic Cage movie in which he doesn’t make a complete ass of himself is worth a look. (92 min)
