Overview: Germany is a country where its citizens are intimately involved in the activities of public art museums, as seen in the tradition of kunstvereine, the civic art associations that emerged in the late 18th century. The Museum Ludwig, operated by the City of Cologne, is a prime example of public art museums whose establishment and activities have been largely driven by the citizenry.  In this symposium, the museum’s director, Dr. Yilmaz Dziewior, will talk about the vibrant interactions between the museum and the public, and the successes achieved through that engagement, with the aim of considering the museums in Japan.

Panelists:
Presentation: Yilmaz Dziewior, Director, Museum Ludwig
Moderator: Kataoka Mami (Chair, Contemporary Art Committee Japan / Executive Advisor, The National Art Communication Center (tentative name) / Director, Mori Art Museum)

2. Translating Contemporary Japanese Art: Discourse, context, and history

Date: Thursday, July 7, 2022, 12:00 pm–1:30 pm (JST)
Format: Live streaming on Zoom Webinar
Registration: Free; advance booking required by July 6, 6pm (JST)   >> Book now
Language:Japanese and English with simultaneous interpretation

Overview: The critique and study of contemporary art in Japan have been ongoing for many years, although its full extent remains difficult to see from overseas. We have invited overseas researchers involved in the study of modern and contemporary Japanese art to discuss how the critique and study of contemporary Japanese art has been perceived internationally, as well as about the kinds of research, critiques, and exhibitions being conducted overseas with respect to contemporary Japanese art. In the course of this discussion, we will continue to think about how best to advance the overseas dissemination of contemporary Japanese art in future.

Panelists:
Reiko Tomii (Art historian)
William Marotti (Associate Professor, The University of California, Los Angeles)
Kajiya Kenji (Translation Project Selection Committee, Contemporary Art Committee Japan / Professor, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo)
