While this event began well after the Edo period, it draws inspiration from the era’s customs, such as Daruma dolls (Japanese wishing dolls) and practicing ritual purification through fire. The temple fills with people eager to renew their luck, trading in last year’s faded dolls for new, brightly painted ones—red, round and filled with promise. It’s a bizarre scene of air thick with smoke and whispered wishes as the old dolls are offered to the fire. But the message behind it is poignant: it is as much about letting go as it is about hope for the year ahead.
