Genreless Kogei

In recent years, crafts are reevaluated in a new context. Since the introduction of the Western concept of art to modern Japan pushed artifacts not recognized as paintings or sculpture into the newly created genre called kōgei, or crafts, artists have explored new expression until today, asking themselves what kōgei is. While critics also have thought about what kōgei should be, the advent of transportation networks and the Internet has begun to undermine traditional concepts of arts and crafts. Indeed, more and more artists are pursuing their own expression using crafts’ materials and techniques, not sticking to the conventional genres. At the same time, critics in fields other than crafts have begun to pay attention to their works, leading to increasing exposure of crafts.

This exhibition presents excellent crafts and designs from Japan and abroad primarily from our collection from the perspectives of design and contemporary art, rather than that of crafts. Presenting works in various forms ranging from vessels to objects, this show provides visitors with an opportunity to appreciate a broad range of expression utilizing crafts’ materials and techniques without caring about genres.
