Kite Market

Feb 01, 2026 at 10:00am ~ Feb 01, 2026 at 6:00pm

Dating back to the Edo period, the Kite Market began as a fire-prevention ritual in a city often plagued by blazes. Locals once purchased Yakuteka kites as protective talismans, believing their ability to rise on the wind could ward off fires. Today, the tradition lives on as a lively Edo-era event, drawing around 50,000 visitors over the two days of Hatsuuma and Ninouma, with bustling stalls and a distinctly old-town atmosphere.
