Takuto Ohta’s First Solo Exhibition: “The Crystallized Echo of Air Quotes” at CONTRAST

CONTRAST gallery in Yoyogi Hachiman, Tokyo, is proud to present “The Crystallized Echo of Air Quotes,” the first solo exhibition by designer and artist Takuto Ohta. The exhibition will run from March 9 to March 16, 2025, showcasing Ohta’s unique exploration of language, perception and artistic expression through photography, sculpture and poetry.

Exhibition Concept

Takuto Ohta’s work questions the fragility of language and meaning in contemporary society. Inspired by the concept of “air quotes,” the gesture used in speech to express irony or uncertainty, Ohta examines how words, emotions and social constructs shift when placed under scrutiny. Through his art, he challenges viewers to reconsider fundamental ideas about humanity, society, communication and value systems.

The exhibition is structured across three distinct spaces, each offering a multilayered perspective on language and materiality. By deconstructing and redefining familiar symbols, Ohta invites visitors into a world where words and objects take on new, crystallized forms.

About Takuto Ohta

Born in 1993 in France, Takuto Ohta is a multidisciplinary designer and artist with a background in craft, industrial design and conceptual art. He graduated from Musashino Art University in 2017 and later completed his Master’s in Design at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022. His work explores the fluidity of meaning and the interplay between objects and human perception, using a broad range of media to challenge conventional ways of thinking.
