In collaboration with the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe in Paris, the New National Theatre Tokyo will present the Japanese premiere of Ivo van Hove’s production of The Glass Menagerie, which had its world premiere in Paris in March 2020. Initially scheduled for the 2020/2021 season’s opening, the NNTT unfortunately had to postpone this event twice due to COVID-19 restrictions. We have finally been able to set a performance date in September 2022 as the opening production for our 2022/2023 season. The legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert plays Amanda in Tennessee William’s autobiographical play, which is directed by Ivo van Hove, one of the busiest directors in the world.
<About The Glass Menagerie>
« The play is memory ». Amanda, her daughter Laura and her son, Tom, are its main characters. Amanda still thinks of herself as a well-bred Southern lady. Tom, who holds a job in a shoe factory, is the family provider; an aspiring poet, he slips away to the movies whenever he gets a chance. As for his elder sister Laura, she is dreadfully, pathologically self-conscious. She never leaves the flat, polishing her collection of tiny, fragile glass animals for hours on end… Three lonely beings practically locked up together, each one dreaming of another, happier life. Until that one memorable evening when it seemed that their dreams might come true. Jim O’Connor, a nice, ordinary boy and a friend of Tom’s, has been mistaken for a « gentleman caller » by Amanda, who already imagines him proposing to Laura. Naturally, her plans turn out to be one more, perhaps final illusion… The plot of The Glass Menagerie is as elusive and as simple as a reminiscence told by Tom. While he unwinds it before us, the stage becomes a « rather dim and poetic » place where the past may be achingly revived. which opened on Broadway in 1945, was William’s first major hit. legacy of symbolism and the attention to concrete, everyday detail, thereby inventing the “memory play” where ghosts may roam freely, recover a visible presence and speak for themselves.
