What you’ll learn
A social media internship with Metropolis Japan offers hands-on experience creating content for one of Tokyo’s leading English-language media brands.
You’ll learn how a multimedia organization plans, produces and distributes social content while developing practical skills in digital marketing, audience growth, content strategy and creative production.
You’ll work closely with our editorial and design team and collaborate with our sales and marketing team. We will tailor the internship where possible to help you develop your individual interests and strengths.
Responsibilities may include:
- Planning and scheduling content across our social media platforms
- Creating Instagram Reels, Stories, posts and other short-form content
- Filming and editing videos at events and locations around Tokyo
- Writing engaging captions and adapting editorial content for social media
- Identifying trends, story ideas and opportunities for audience growth
- Supporting social coverage of press events, openings and cultural events
- Creating simple graphics and visual assets
- Assisting with community engagement and monitoring comments and messages
- Reviewing performance data and helping improve our social media strategy
- Collaborating on sponsored and client content
- Supporting photography, research, fact-checking and other editorial tasks when required
You’ll leave with practical experience and a portfolio of published social media work created for a recognized Tokyo media brand.
Ideal candidate
- Proactive, creative and organized, with the confidence to take initiative
- Genuinely interested in Tokyo’s culture, food, arts, entertainment and events
- Familiar with platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook
- Comfortable creating short-form video content, including filming and editing
- Able to write clear, engaging English-language social copy
- Native-level or highly fluent in English; Japanese ability is a plus
- Comfortable appearing in content occasionally, although this is not essential
- Familiarity with tools such as Canva, CapCut or Adobe Creative Suite is a plus
- Able to work both independently and collaboratively
- Willing to attend and create content at press events and locations around Tokyo
- Must bring their own laptop when working in the office
Further details
- This is an unpaid internship. A commuting allowance and certain work-related expenses may be provided under specific conditions.
- Interns are responsible for their own accommodation and day-to-day living expenses.
- A desk and other necessary resources will be provided when working in person.
- Candidates must currently be based in Tokyo or already have concrete plans to move to Tokyo before beginning the internship.
- The role combines office-based work in Akasaka with content creation at locations and events around Tokyo.
- Working hours are flexible but will generally fall within our standard office hours of 9:30am–6:30pm, Monday to Friday.
- Interns are expected to work at least three full days per week.
- Depending on the success of the internship, the needs of the company and the intern’s goals, future freelance, part-time or full-time opportunities may be possible.

- Reels, TikToks or other videos you have created
- Social media campaigns or content calendars
- Photography, graphic design or written social content
- A portfolio or relevant university project
If you do not yet have professional examples, please create one sample Instagram Reel or carousel post inspired by content from the Metropolis Japan website. This should demonstrate how you would adapt one of our stories for social media.
