The daughter of renowned Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti, pianist Bianca Gismonti makes her first visit to Japan. With a light touch, Gismonti refracts tropical sound and light through a prism of traditional jazz. She arrives as the head of her own group for two nights at the Cotton Club in Marunouchi. The trio also includes her husband, Julio Falavigna, with whom she recorded the multihued new album Sonhos de Nascimento (Dreams of Birth). Brisk and poppy, tracks like the upbeat “Filha de Acari”(Acari’s Daughter) channel música popular brasileira—post-bossa nova Brazilian urban pop, a.k.a. MPB—while making occasional space for haunting classical explorations like “Pequena Dú” (Little Dú).
Jun 29-30, Cotton Club. See concert listings (jazz/world) for details.
