Bean Throwing and Dance of the 7 Lucky Gods
Feb 02, 2026 at 10:00am ~ Feb 02, 2026 at 2:00pm
Setsubun originally refers to the dividing line between the four seasons: the beginning of spring, the beginning of summer, the beginning of autumn, and the beginning of winter. Because the beginning of spring falls close to New Year’s Day on the lunar calendar, the day before the beginning of spring became a special day for celebrating the new year and warding off evil spirits. While this practice varies by region, it is said that on Setsubun, people throw beans to ward off evil spirits, and that eating one more bean than their age will ensure good health and freedom from illness for the year.
