Confluence Tokyo – São Paulo

Jan 16, 2026 at 12:00am ~ Feb 13, 2026 at 12:00am

Confluence Tokyo – São Paulo is an exhibition held at the Embassy of Brazil in Tokyo that brings together the long-standing tradition of the São Paulo Biennial with the city’s street art culture. Founded in 1951, the São Paulo Biennial is the oldest international art biennial after Venice, and this exhibition introduces its history, themes, and contemporary relevance alongside works by leading street artists from São Paulo.

The exhibition explores the idea of “confluence,” where biennial and street art, past and present, and Tokyo and São Paulo intersect. It includes a section presenting the outcomes and background of the 36th São Paulo Biennial, which runs in Brazil until January 11, 2026, as well as a curated selection of street artists who have shaped São Paulo’s urban visual culture.

A key highlight is the participation of Lidia Lisbôa, an exhibiting artist from the 36th São Paulo Biennial, who will visit Japan specially for the opening ceremony. The exhibition is structured around three perspectives: the history and present of the São Paulo Biennial, the energy of São Paulo’s street art scene, and a space for creative dialogue between Japanese and Brazilian artists through curatorial collaboration and exchange.
