Daikoku Matsuri
Jan 16, 2026 at 9:00am ~ Jan 18, 2026 at 4:00pm
Dedicated to Daikoku, one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods and a symbol of wealth and prosperity, this New Year festival centers on formal prayer rites and blessings led by monks, including a ritual renewal for Daikoku statues.
Highlights range from a bracing ice-water purification ceremony on Saturday morning to Sunday’s hocho-shiki—a rare Heian-period culinary ritual in which master chefs ceremonially prepare a carp—blending spirituality, endurance and tradition.
