In an Ideal world, I’d be Bleeding in the Dark for Weeks and Weeks

Abortion — though far more common human experience than is often acknowledged — remains largely untold, even to one’s closest kin. In this project, Jiye Kim recounts a family’s decision to end a pregnancy after a genetic anomaly was discovered. Told through the voice of a woman whose second pregnancy unravels, it reveals how reproductive journeys are marked by irreconcilable contradictions: the ethical weight of responsibility for a being that is both part of one’s body and yet separate from it; the clarity of selfhood colliding with the visceral, mammalian pull of biology; the paradox of having to give birth in order not to give birth—laying bare the entanglement of life and death; and the ways grief and hope can shift places almost seamlessly. Through images and texts, Jiye hopes to provide a space of pause, where solace, recognition, and empathy might surface.
