Grand Sumo Tournament (May Basho)

May 10, 2026 at 8:30am ~ May 24, 2026 at 6:00pm

Grand Sumo Tournament (May Basho) takes place at Ryogoku Kokugikan, sumo’s spiritual home in Tokyo. Over 15 days, wrestlers from across Japan compete in a structured ranking system. Each day follows a steady build. Lower-division matches begin in the morning, while top-division bouts take place in the late afternoon.

The highlight comes with the makuuchi division. This is where yokozuna and ozeki compete, drawing the most attention. Matches are short, often lasting only seconds, but the tension builds well before the initial charge. Rituals play a key role. Salt tossing, stomping and ring-entering ceremonies set the tone for each bout.

Timing matters. Arriving early gives a quieter look at the venue and a chance to watch rising wrestlers. However, most visitors aim for the afternoon session when the arena fills and energy peaks. Seats closer to the ring offer an immersive view, while upper-tier seats provide a full perspective of the arena.

Tickets often sell out in advance, especially for weekends and final days. Booking early is essential. Same-day tickets may be available in limited numbers, but lines form early in the morning. Expect queues outside the venue before opening.

Food inside the arena adds to the experience. Bento boxes and snacks are widely available, along with souvenirs tied to specific wrestlers. Eating during matches is common, though most spectators stay attentive during top bouts.

Ryogoku Station sits a short walk from the venue, making access straightforward. Crowds build in the late afternoon, so arriving before peak hours helps avoid delays.

The final day decides the tournament winner. Stakes rise, and every match carries weight. Even for first-time visitors, the structure is easy to follow and the atmosphere remains focused throughout.
