Nakamura Keith Haring Collection : Queer Film Screening

“What is queer? What is queer film?” 

The Nakamura Keith Haring Museum carries on Keith Haring’s will and brings out various activities every June which is also pride month. This year, as a related event to the “Keith Haring: New York Downtown Renaissance” exhibition (held from June 3), the “Nakamura Keith Haring Museum” will be held on June 24 and June 25. You can participate with a two-day pass for the screenings for just ¥500. 

In addition, from 6:15pm, Gustavo Vinagre’s “Three Tidy Tigers Tied a Tie Tighter” will be shown for the first time in Japan. Vinagri’s film was highly acclaimed at film festivals around the world in 2022, winning the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Normal Screen 

Normal Screen, a video screening series will depict the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community regardless of their era or region. Sho Akita of Normal Screen will talk about the word “queer” and activism in queer film from 5pm – 6pm at the platform in the exhibition room.

Normal Screen began in the summer of 2015, mainly based in Tokyo. It introduces works and artists’ activities that depict LGBTQ+ experiences regardless of era or region. Works related to AIDS activism are screened in collaboration with theaters, communities and organizations. 

Keith Haring

In the 1980s, during the heightened discrimination, prejudice and oppression against the LGBTQ+ community, Keith Haring opened up about being a gay man. He also worked as an artist in the LGBTQ+ community and carried out awareness-raising activities, aiming to promote a correct understanding of HIV/AIDS and the visualization of the LGBTQ+ community.
