Open the Drawing Manual—Sketches by Hokusai or Many More
Mar 17, 2026 at 9:30am ~ May 24, 2026 at 5:30pm
Marking its tenth anniversary, “Commemorating a Decade: Open the Drawing Manual—Sketches by Hokusai or Many More” invites visitors into the instructional world of Katsushika Hokusai at The Sumida Hokusai Museum. Running from March 17 to May 24, 2026 , this exhibition explores the rich tradition of edehon—illustrated drawing manuals that made artistic techniques accessible to aspiring artists during the Edo period. Centered around the iconic Hokusai Manga (known overseas as Sketches by Hokusai), the exhibition traces how these woodblock-printed manuals shaped both Japanese and global visual culture. Through original manuals by Hokusai and his students, alongside works influenced by them, the show reveals how instruction, imitation, and innovation intertwined to form a lasting artistic legacy. From detailed technical guides to picture collections meant for copying, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see how drawing was taught, learned, and reimagined across generations.
