Frankenstein’s Army

Mad scientist flick gets a steam punk make over

A squad of Soviet soldiers speaking English with hammy Russian accents and with a propaganda filmmaker conveniently in tow happens upon the mad-scientist lab of the great-great-great grandson or something of Dr. Viktor Frankenstein, who is gleefully splicing together dead-soldier parts with mechanical claws, drills, jaws, etc. Pro: visually imaginative creature design (rookie director Richard Raaphorst is a storyboard artist). Cons: full of compromised, forced, found-footage clichés; no plot, suspense or reason to see it unless you’re a stoned, extreme gore-loving steam punk fan and it’s midnight. Japanese title: Bukiningen. (84 min)
