Clinical Trials Tokyo recruits international residents and visitors to join a paid clinical trial at a fully licensed hospital in Tokyo.

Japanese regulators require separate data from Japanese and non-Japanese groups before they approve a medicine developed overseas. As a result, participants help bring medicines already used in the U.S. and Europe to patients in Japan.

The Paid Clinical Trial Role

Participants take part in a short medical study and receive compensation for their time. Most studies involve a hospital stay of three or eight nights, though some run longer.

Qualified physicians and nurses monitor participants throughout. In addition, staff run the entire process in English.

What’s Involved

• Online application: a five-minute questionnaire on basic health history, age and availability
• Consultation: a brief chat to confirm the fit and book a screening slot
• Health screening: a 2- to 2.5-hour hospital visit with blood work, vitals and a full checkup
• Hospital stay: wifi, plenty of free time and hospital meals; laptops and gaming consoles are welcome
• Payment: arrives by bank transfer once the study ends

Compensation

• Screening visit: ¥5,000, paid whether or not you go on to join a trial
• Three-night study: ¥110,000, plus meals and accommodation
• Eight-night study: ¥280,000, plus meals and accommodation

Amounts vary by study. However, the team confirms exact terms before anyone commits.

Who Can Apply

• International residents and visitors in Japan on any visa type, including tourists
• No Japanese language ability required
• Eligibility varies by study and typically depends on age, BMI and medical history

Also, participants can withdraw at any point without penalty.
