Unique butoh danced by housewives and surfers

Originally published on metropolis.co.jp on August 2012

The Japanese avant-garde dance form butoh usually features buff young men and women in body paint. Unique among leading butoh companies, Torifune includes a range of physiques up to those in their 80s. Many of its performers are culled from the workshops it conducts in its Shonan base, which attract a variety of amateurs from housewives to surfers. Directed by Yukio and Kayo Mikami, Sai is the latest in Torifune’s “Cold Standing Horse” series and comes as part of the “Dance Ga Mitai!” contemporary performance art festival.
