The storied entertainment district of Akasaka gets its first-ever jazz festival, with local shrines, public schools and, of course, the area’s many clubs and bars taking part. Performing for free(!) from midday through evening will be some of Japan’s finest jazz musicians, including fleet post-bop guitarist Kazumi Watanabe and atmospheric vocal duo Fried Pride. Under the keywords “Wa” (representing Japan) and “Yo” (the West), the festival will also host a concert by famed drum troupe Ondekoza, who sparked the modern taiko boom after forming in 1969.
