Every year tens of thousands of music and nature lovers make a pilgrimage to Fuji Rock at the end of July to see both domestic and international artists rock out in the forested mountain area of Niigata—more often than not in the rain. For those who can’t get a ticket or schedule that weekend off, there’s still a chance to get some of that Naeba feelin’ in this summer—and leave Tokyo’s city heat behind. On two occasions leading up to the event, volunteers are needed to help repair and beautify the famous Naeba Independence Boardwalk that meanders through the woods. Lying under snow all winter, some parts rot and need to be taken away. New planks are painted and hammered in place, but it won’t get done by itself—so come out and join the crew. Bonuses include: camping, free bento lunches, great camaraderie and two days’ worth of free onsen entry tickets. Volunteers needed the weekends of June 21-22 and July 12-13.
