A former editor for leading men’s magazine Brutus, Kyoichi Tsuzuki in the 1990s turned his focus to Japan’s less glossy side. For his latest photographic exhibition, “Anya Komichi Ueno to Asakusa Underground Cruise,” Tsuzuki tours the shabby eastern half of Tokyo, focusing his lens on underground cultures ranging from transvestites and death metal fanatics to fundoshi bars (gay bars where men where fundoshi loin clothes). Trendspotters like Tsuzuki say the east side of Tokyo is its new Williamsburg—a place where young creatives forced out of costly Shibuya have moved for cheap digs.
