Aoyama Theater’s annual taiko extravaganza features a pair of major concerts followed by a two-day drumming competition. The program launches with a performance by the venerable Oedo Sukeroku Taiko group, characterized by acrobatic movements and stylish gestures based on bon odori and kabuki. The next night sees an omnibus event entitled “Densetsu no Chikara” (“Power of Tradition”), featuring six different groups. Over the weekend, the 9th Tokyo International Taiko Contest offers performances by teams from all over Japan, with workshops for budding drummers.
