Now that the engineering challenges of building viable electric cars are, more or less, out of the way, one of the biggest remaining roadblocks to their success lies in the battery, something for which Nissan may have a solution.
Nissan-Renault big cheese Carlos Ghosn recently told a French newspaper that it may eliminate consumer fears about batteries failing after a few years by leasing them for a monthly fee instead of forcing electric car drivers to buy them outright.
Tossing out a number, Ghosn suggested such a lease might cost about $150 a month, which—when looked at in light of the projected $30,000 for the Nissan Leaf electric model that’s due out next year—paints a pretty expensive picture of a greener motoring life.
