Gallery10[TOH] Yoyogi Broadway Exhibition: Mika Kan – “Happy Dinner Party”

Jul 08, 2023 at 1:00pm ~ Jul 30, 2023 at 8:00pm

Gallery10[TOH] in Yoyogi Broadway will hold a solo exhibition for contemporary artist Mika Kan throughout July.

The artist often delves into the enigmatic realm between human and non-human, inviting viewers to question the essence of our existence. The artist presents unique juxtapositions of her own likeness alongside meticulously crafted dolls, molded to resemble the artist.

As spectators immerse themselves in her exhibitions, they are confronted with the challenge of discerning the distinction between the human and the artificial. The uncanny resemblance between the dolls and the artist blurs boundaries, defying easy categorization and evoking a sense of intrigue and contemplation.

This exhibition will focus on a new work, “Happy Dinner Party,” which was created by photographing multiple life-size dolls in cooperation with love doll manufacturer Orient Industry.

Happy Dinner Party” is a photographic representation of three women making canapés and confiding their problems to each other, using dolls. The exhibition will focus on more human emotions, especially on the theme of “sisterhood” and  solidarity among women.

Mika Kan:
Born in 1988 in Kanagawa Prefecture, artist Mika Kan uses objects such as dolls, photographs, and optical devices to questions the boundary between human and non-human, often with reference to 19th century culture.
