Sep 23, 2024 at 9:00am ~ Sep 24, 2024 at 10:00pm
Get ready for food, fun, and naked (scantily-clad) men at Ohara Hadaka Matsuri!
Not ready for matsuri season to end? Head to Isumi City, Chiba, for the thrilling Ohara Hadaka Matsuri, also known as the “Naked Man Festival”. At this lively celebration you will see groups of “naked” men carrying mikoshi (portable shrines) into the sea to mark the start of the harvest season. The “naked” comes from the traditional loin-cloth (fundoshi) they wear.
Step into Tradition
The Ohara Hadaka Matsuri is a centuries-old tradition that has been bringing the community together since the Edo period. What started as one of the few entertainment options for locals has transformed into a huge annual celebration, now held in late September. Locals and visitors gather to ring in the autumn season and pray for a prosperous harvest and a bountiful fishing season.
“Naked Festival” Highlights
The action kicks off bright and early as the “naked” men parade through the streets, carrying the mikoshi shrines. Don’t worry—they aren’t really naked, just dressed in traditional white loincloths!
Make sure to get to Ohara Port by 1 pm for the shiofumi. Watch as the shrine-bearers wade into the ocean at Ohara Beach, accompanied by shouting and cheering. This is a must-see for anyone who loves high-energy festivals.
In the evening, the Owakareshiki ceremony begins. The mikoshi are paraded through the streets, lanterns are lit, and the entire town glows as the gods are sent off for another year.

The Grand Finale
A fireworks display lights up the night sky, followed by singing and dancing that officially welcomes the autumn season. It’s the perfect way to end a day full of excitement and tradition!
Mark your calendars for this festival! Join the locals and experience the Ohara Hadaka Matsuri.
