Sanja Matsuri 2026
May 15, 2026 at 12:00am ~ May 17, 2026 at 8:00pm
Sanja Matsuri brings a different rhythm to Asakusa each May. Streets around Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine fill early with locals, photographers and festival regulars. The highlight is the procession of mikoshi, portable shrines carried by teams through tightly packed streets. The movement is loud and physical. Chants rise, drums echo and the pace rarely slows.
Each day offers a slightly different experience. Friday opens with a more formal parade, including geisha and performers in traditional dress. Saturday builds intensity as neighborhood mikoshi begin circulating through surrounding districts. Sunday is the peak. The main shrines leave Asakusa Shrine and move through the area, drawing the largest crowds.
Expect dense foot traffic, especially near Nakamise Street and the shrine grounds. Arriving before 9 a.m. gives you space to move and better viewing angles. By midday, the main routes become difficult to navigate. Comfortable shoes are essential, and cash helps when buying food from street stalls.
Food is part of the experience. Stalls line the streets with yakitori, kakigori and festival snacks. Eating while walking is common, but stepping aside keeps the flow moving. If you prefer a calmer view, position yourself along side streets where mikoshi pass without the heaviest crowds.
Public transport is the easiest way in. Asakusa Station on the Ginza Line and Toei Asakusa Line sits within walking distance. Expect station congestion during peak hours, especially Sunday afternoon. Leaving slightly earlier avoids the heaviest rush.
Sanja Matsuri balances tradition with intensity. It feels less staged than other festivals. The energy comes from the participants, not just the spectacle.
