Hunt for Treasures at Setagaya Boro-ichi Flea Market
Jan 15, 2025 at 9:00am ~ Jan 16, 2025 at 8:00pm
Officially recognized as one of Tokyo’s Intangible Folk Cultural Properties, the Setagaya Boro-ichi has been around for almost 450 years. “Boro,” means “old fabric scraps,” and this makes sense as Edo Japan had a firm “waste not want not” mentality—everything from parasols to ash was collected and recycled. Today, rather than scraps, bag yourself classic Japanese antiques and traditional pottery or beautiful hand-me-down kimonos and charming souvenirs. For snacks, follow the crowds and try the daikan mochi, a chewy rice cake that’s a specialty to the market and freshly made on the spot.
