Apr 22, 2025 at 9:30am ~ Jun 15, 2025 at 5:00pm
Step into Edo-period Japan with “Tsutaya Juzaburo: A Driving Force in the Content Business” at the Tokyo National Museum, from April 22 to June 15, 2025. This special exhibition highlights the remarkable legacy of Tsutaya Juzaburo, also known as Tsutajige, a pioneering Edo-period publisher who shaped Japanese art and culture.
Renowned for introducing the world to ukiyo-e masters such as Kitagawa Utamaro and Toshusai Sharaku, Tsutajige’s work captured the vibrant essence of Edo. Using Kabuki theater, red-light districts and Kyoka poetry as his inspiration, he created works that reflected the energy and creativity of the era. His collaborations with samurai, townspeople, actors and poets transformed publishing into a cultural phenomenon, laying the foundation for what we might call a media mix today.
The exhibition will showcase ukiyo-e masterpieces, offering visitors an in-depth look at Edo culture, focusing on the Tenmei and Kansei periods (1781–1801). Through this collection, you’ll experience the innovative spirit of Tsutajige and his role in revolutionizing the publishing industry.
